COURSE PROGRAMME
1.Hazards of Shiftwork
Changes in the workplace such as job sharing, part-time work and more flexible work hours are indicators that shiftwork is on the increase. Industries such as airlines, hospitals and railways have long had round-the-clock operations and extended shopping hours are fast becoming common place. Research shows, however, that there are significant health and safety issues associated with shiftwork. Shiftworkers and night workers often are tired and sleepy because of their work schedule. Being overly tired makes it difficult to concentrate, which increases the possibility of errors or accidents. This can be a risk both to the worker and to the public. The stress of shiftwork also can aggravate health conditions, such as heart disease or digestive disorders
2. Health & Safety Effects of Shiftwork
Shiftworkers and former shiftworkers show more signs of ill health than people on fixed day work. Health problems may appear after a short stint of shiftwork, or may be only apparent after some years. shiftwork schedules are demanding and likely to produce stress and fatigue. Here we summarize ways that shiftwork might affect safety, health, or ability to do the job. Some of these things happen very soon after starting shiftwork. We talk about these under Immediate Effects. Health changes take a longer time to appear. We talk about health under Long-Term Health Effects. Common health problems often associated with shiftworkwill be discussed later.
3. Managing Shiftwork
Adapting to shiftwork is easy for some people while others never adjust. Exercise and a well balanced diet will probably help any adjustment. Family understanding and cooperation can also reduce stress that seems to go with a shiftworker’s lifestyle. If you do find it difficult to adjust to shiftwork, you should discuss the problem with your supervisor or manager, occupational health nurse or doctor or counsellor or employee advisory service. They may be able to help you find a solution.
4. Coping Strategies for the Individual
The specific shiftwork schedule design is a significant variable affecting the degree of sleep difficulties experienced by individual shiftworkers. Schedule design considerations is beyond the scope, has recently provided detailed practical recommendations for achieving chronobiologi-cally sound shift schedule systems. Within the constraints of the shift schedule, individual workers can apply chronobiological principles to determine the besttimeforsleeping..
5. Medical Screening and Surveillance
Preplacement assessment recommendations for medical evaluations of workers before they begin night work assignments have been made by occupational medicine practitioners and researchers involved in studying the health effects of shiftwork. On going medical surveillance including periodic medical examinations, and appropriate laboratory testing has been recommended for rotating and permanent night workers. In addition follow-up evaluations of day workers who have left shift work for medical reasons has been advised. The frequency of medical surveillance examinations is somewhat arbitrary
